Purvis died from a gunshot wound to the head fired from the pistol given to him by fellow agents when he resigned from the FBI. A later investigation suggested that Purvis may have shot himself accidentally while trying to extract a tracer bullet jammed in the pistol.

(x) 100 Years Ago Today Monday 1st of December 1924 33-year-old Mass murderer Fritz Heinrich Angerstein shoots and stabs eight people including his wife, mother in law and several servants in Oranienstadt Dillenburg, Hessen, Germany. Angerstein then stabbed himself several times, causing severe but not life-threatening wounds and called for help. When help arrived Angerstein claimed he had been attacked by bandits, who had killed everyone in the house and left him for dead. The victims were his wife Käthe Angerstein, his mother-in-law Katharina Barth, his maidservant Minna Stoll, his 18-year-old sister-in-law Ella Barth, his bookkeeper Reinhold Diethardt, his clerk Heinrich Kiehl, his gardener Alex Geiß, and the gardener's assistant Rudi Darr. |
