McLaren's Can-Am car crashed on the Lavant Straight just before Woodcote corner. The rear bodywork came adrift at speed making the loss of aerodynamic downforce destabilising the car, which spun, left the track and hit a bunker used as a flag station.

Singer-songwriter Donna Summer born as LaDonna Adrian Gaines aka The Queen of Disco dies of lung cancer at the age of 64 in Naples, Florida, United States. Summer believed she developed her lung cancer by inhaling toxic particles following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York.
